PostSubject: Corolla failed emissions and handbrake   Sun Apr 03, 2016 9:28 am

Well lads brought the at for a retest this morning and failed again.
It's a 98 Corolla 1.3 164000 miles, serviced last week.

Brakes: Brake effort. Ovality. Imbalance
Rear axle, nearside-1.130kN. Offside-1.140kN. Nearside-18% offside-13%. 1%. (Above 30% fail)
Service brake 58% (less than 55% fail)

Parking brake, nearside-1790kN. Offside-0.670kN. Imbalance-63% (above 50% fail)
Parking brake effort 22%. (Less than 16% fail)

When I brought it in first the slider pin was stuck so cleaned it up, new pads and there was a massive difference. So I don't know what it might be now.

Emissions:
Low idle CO 0.09 (above .50% fail)
HC 329ppm. (Above 0ppm fail)
I passed low idle

High idle lambda 0.98 (between 0.97 and 1.03)
CO 1.43 (above .30% fail)
HC 369 ppm (above 200 fail)
I know my emissions is stupidly high. My timing belt was done after my last nct so don't know if it's off. Tried dipetane it brought down my Co a small bit and gave the lambda a better reading it was .97.

Thanks for any help:pale:

Could it be only the cat?

I've a good cat there out of a 1.3 4efe Corolla if it's any good to you?

Just check the exhaust for any holes or leaks first that throws the readings way off

I'd be looking for any cracks or holes in exhaust, even a pinhole can throw emissions way off

Clean up and readjust rear brakes.
Automatic adjuster on r/h has seized, since imbalance.

Looks like oxygen sensor failed, for that she's running rich and failed test.
Catalyst might b burned out by now...

I'll try look for a leak tomorrow see if there is anything might be at the manifold
Is the oxygen sensor at the air filter?

I have calipers on the back

Sometimes just taking the calipers apart and putting them back together after a good clean does the world of good. If not check the cables could be stretched or seized.
Emisions sounds like a sensor or cat. Does car tick over perfect?

Hi lads sorry for the late update, finally got around to bringing the car back in for the retest failed again. just on emissions this time brakes ended up being a half broken cable that wasnt fully engaging the drivers side.

Emissions i found a massive leak at the downpipe manifold joint and patched it. New readings are as follows

Emissions:
Low idle CO 0.04 (above .50% fail)
HC 305ppm. (Above 0ppm fail)
I passed low idle

High idle lambda 1.00 (between 0.97 and 1.03)
CO .80 (above .30% fail)
HC 270 ppm (above 200 fail)

Is it a strong possibility I burnt out the cat?

Your lamda reading is good so your O2 should be spot on. If the exhaust isn't leaking and you have checked over the rest of the car then it had to be the cat

Lambda reading was better after i fixed the hole. Can't seem to see any other holes in the exhaust anyway I'll try a good cat and see how it goes. thanks
